What is Chiropractic?

Founded in 1895, chiropractic has been the healthcare choice of millions of Americans, who want safe and effective treatment without drugs or surgery.  Throughout time chiropractic has with stood countless accounts of misrepresentation, bias, and illegal discrimination; which the AMA was found guilty of in 1987 in federal court.  All chiropractors have received a doctorial degree from government accredited Chiropractic College; and later a license to practice is earned with numerous state and national board tests.  Today’s chiropractor receives a very broad education, which typically takes about 7-8 years of post high school education.  In fact it’s similar to that received by medical practitioners.
Chiropractic is a complementary and alternative medicine healthcare profession that focuses on the treatment and prevention of neuromusculoskeletal (nerve, muscle, joints, bone) complaints.  Chiropractic treatment is a non-invasive form of treatment, without the use of drugs or surgery.  Treatment is typically in the form of adjustments/manipulation to subluxations, in which a chiropractor restores normal motion and function into a specific joint.  In order to best diagnose the source of the problem, Chiropractors treat in a holistic manner.  The word holistic refers to the whole person.  Chiropractic care is concerned with the health of the whole body, not just relief of symptoms from the ailing body part.  For that manner, chiropractic care is often accompanied by physiotherapies, nutritional counseling, supplements, exercises, stretching, and education on the ergonomics of daily life.  Doctors of chiropractic recognize the value of working in cooperation with other healthcare practitioners, when in the best interest of the patient.

What is a Subluxation?
A subluxation is the result of improper motion, or position, of a joint.  This may be the result of injury, adhesions, degenerative changes, repetitive movements, poor posture or ergonomics.  A subluxation affects nerve communications between your brain and your body.  Your body responds by sending signals to your brain of something is wrong, or pain.  Your brain, in turn, sends signals for your body to splint, or protect, the dysfunctional region, with muscle spasms.  Every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body is controlled and regulated by your nervous system, either directly through contact or indirectly through hormones and other chemical messengers.  Your nervous system is hard at work orchestrating and coordinating all cellular functions, and any inhibition in your nervous system will result in pathology.
