{"id":164,"date":"2020-08-28T16:09:31","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T16:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/?p=164"},"modified":"2020-08-28T16:09:32","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T16:09:32","slug":"cinnamon-the-spice-missing-in-your-diet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/cinnamon-the-spice-missing-in-your-diet\/","title":{"rendered":"Cinnamon: The spice missing in your diet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yes, normally you see\nheadlines of spice up your dating, life, style, and more, but here I am about\nto encourage you to spice up you food.&nbsp;\nThe typical American diet consists of the same few ingredients in\ndifferent combinations and twists.&nbsp; Just\ntake a quick look at the ingredients of a hamburger, hot dog, spaghetti and\nmeat balls, taco, enchilada, tostada, burrito, pizza, steak breakfast and dinner;\ncan you say red meat, cheese, butter, lard, oil, condiments, pinto beans, tomatoes,\niceberg lettuce, onion, carbohydrates from potatoes, breads, and tortillas,\nsalt and other very similar seasonings.&nbsp; When\nyou venture away from these American diet staples and see the ingredients of\nsome Mediterranean food, Indian food, Greek food, Japanese food, and others you\nsee more vegetables, like in humus, and many more spices, like curry, turmeric,\nginger, and cinnamon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often times we take cinnamon for granted, but cinnamon&#8217;s history is quite interesting; peppered with mythology, tax revenue, accent history, rituals, embalming, ancient Chinese medicine and it is even mentioned in the Bible.\u00a0 At one time cinnamon was even considered more valuable than gold. Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of a particular evergreen tree that grows wildly.\u00a0 These trees must be 30 years old before they are ready to be prepare for harvest, but will produce for many years after.\u00a0 Most of the world\u2019s cinnamon is found in Sir Lanka and south India.\u00a0 However, cinnamon is also grown in Madagascar, Brazil, and the Caribbean; while a similar spice, with similar flavor to cinnamon, called cassia is produced in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.\u00a0 Cinnamon is then tied into the history of the spice trades in India; for the history buffs this would be what was once known as the Dutch controlled West Indies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-bark-1600x1067.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinnamon is totally flavorful, but yet often an under used spice; and left for mostly deserts.\u00a0 Cinnamon can be purchased in sticks (or quills as they are called), oil, and powder.\u00a0 Today cinnamon can be found in things from deserts, potpourri, tooth picks, breakfast cereals, tooth pastes, meat seasonings, and more.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some will find it interesting there are different varieties, grades, and prices of cinnamon.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past two blogs, on sugar and diabetes, I eluded to the spice cinnamon and its benefits for type 2 diabetic patients.\u00a0 Some small clinical research suggests cinnamon has the following benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Anti-viral<\/li><li>promotes healthy\nblood glucose levels<\/li><li>healthy lipid and\ntriglyceride metabolism<\/li><li>promotes glucose\nutilization in skeletal muscle cells<\/li><li>promotes blood\nflow<\/li><li>anti-clotting<\/li><li>anti-inflammatory<\/li><li>anti-microbial\nand because of its anti-microbial properties some suggest its use as a food\npreservative<\/li><li>slows stomach\nemptying<\/li><li>improves response\nto insulin<\/li><li>reduced LDL\ncholesterol<\/li><li>reduced\ntriglycerides<\/li><li>reduced blood\nsugar levels<\/li><li>its smell will\nboost brain function <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-1536x1017.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-2048x1356.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.hannonchiropractic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cinnamon-powder-1600x1060.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinnamon is known also to\ncontain other healthy nutrients such as manganese, fiber, and calcium.&nbsp; As always consult with your healthcare\nprofessional prior to adding cinnamon to your diet for health benefits.&nbsp; Cinnamon is not recommended during pregnancy,\nlactation, and those with a known food allergy to cinnamon.&nbsp;
